WESTERN PALEARCTIC

Today is 17th December. The following first records for the Western Palearctic were found on this date:


Long-billed Murrelet

17th December, 1997.

Lake Zurich, near Zollikon, Meilen, Switzerland.

Date approx. Found dead in a fishing net between the 15th and 18th December. Previously treated as a race of Marbled Murrelet.

Maumary, L. and Knaus, P. 2000. Marbled Murrelet in Switzerland: a Pacific Auk new to the Western Palearctic. British Birds 93(4): 190-199


Belted Kingfisher

17th December, 1899.

De Steeg, Gelderland, Netherlands.

Shot and collected. The specimen was subsequently lost during WW2 however a photograph remains confirming the record
